Next Chapter Book

I was approached by a pair of Detroit book enthusiasts who wanted me to design a logo for their upcoming used bookstore. The couple sought a logo that would reflect their passion for books and convey their desire to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere for a bookstore in East Side Detroit.

Logo

After discussions, we settled on the concept of an open-book logo with one of the pages in the process of turning, indicating that it is being read. This dynamic action serves as an invitation into the world of books, mirroring the couple's aspiration to welcome the community into their store. Additionally, the inclusion of the letter 'W' in the top left corner serves as a subtle nod to the couple's last name, Williams.

Colors

In line with the couple's preference for black and white, yet desiring to evoke the cozy ambiance of a coffee bookstore, I developed a color scheme. The main logo incorporates black and off-white tones for a clean and classic look, while warm neutral colors are introduced to infuse a sense of coziness into the overall design. This carefully chosen color palette aims to strike a balance between the desired modern aesthetic and the inviting, warm atmosphere synonymous with a comfortable bookstore setting.

Fonts

To capture the essence of the books they sell, the bookstore aimed for a font that resonates with the nostalgic and comfortable ambiance of old bookstores. The choice fell on American Typewriter for its old-timey and cozy feel. Paired with Avenir, the combination allows the header font to shine while maintaining a comfortable and collected identity for the bookstore. The selected fonts contribute to creating the desired atmosphere that aligns with the couple's vision for their bookstore.

Progress

Beginning as a pop-up shop in Detroit's east side Alger Theatre, the bookstore has now expanded to establish a permanent storefront. The owners are making significant strides in their mission to bring books to the Detroit community, transitioning from a temporary presence to a more permanent and accessible location for book enthusiasts in the area.
